You decide to get a better look at the tree, and wander up to it. Movement from near the roots alerts you to the presence of a little animal...

It appears to be a gerbil, and it also appears to be quite used to humans. The little creature comes right over to you, and you let it crawl up onto your hand. As you do so, you notice little food and water dishes set out near a nook in the roots of the tree; so this one isn't completely wild or on its own. You put the gerbil down, and let it scamper back to the roots, and after a few more minutes, you continue on your way.
